Evaluation: Question 4

How Did You Use Media Technologies In The Construction And Research, Planning And Evaluation Stages?

Research And Planning: (Blogger, Prezi, Excel,  Word, Internet , PowerPoint)

I used Blogger again this year to document all my research and planning for my production, however this year I felt I was more confident and experienced with blogger allowing me to be more creative and adding extra posts.

I used Prezi to produce a Publication Plan for my  Magazine cover 'ProFilm' to present it's target audience. This interactive technology allowed me to be creative in presenting my work in a quick and easy way, as I used this last year.

Microsoft Office Excel was used again this year to produce a production schedule, simply writing a chart of dates and when I was going to complete the task by. This was very useful when producing my teaser trailer, magazine cover and poster.

Microsoft Word was used for scripts for my teaser trailer, also when producing audition posters. With this software I am very familiar with as I have been using it for several years, therefore was quick and easy to use.

The internet was used throughout the whole process and was very useful, I used websites such as YouTube to analyse teaser trailers for codes and conventions, also to research scores that influenced for my own trailer. I also used social networking sites such as Twitter to receive audience feedback. Popular web browsers such as Google helped me to view real media texts such as film magazine and posters.

PowerPoint was used from the very start of the research and planning  when we produced a pitch for the teaser trailer where I screen grabbed it then uploading onto Blogger also I used this software to present my questionnaire results using pie charts.

Production:  (SLR Camera's, Sony Camera's, Mini-DV Camcorders, iMovie, Garage Band, iShowU, Photoshop)

Canon SLR Camera was used again this year to take photographs for the magazine cover and poster, due to using them last year I felt that I could experience more with the camera using different settings and lighting etc as a result I had more variety to chose from and the quality seemed much better.

The Mini DV camcorders were used to film the teaser trailer, As I do film studies I already had experience in using them therefore I had an advantage, however I did learn new techniques  in the process for example using the tripod for the majority of the shots to create steady unprofessional shots, also recording numerous takes so that you have a vast choice when editing.

I used a digital camera to take photographs of locations, costumes, make up tests, head model shots and short video's for the location recce's. Using these meant it was easy and quick as they are very portable.

Imovie was used in the production of my teaser trailer 'After Dark', As I was familiar with the software from AS Film Studies I decided to take the role of editor. By using Imovie further I learnt and developed new skills from inserting footage over the green screen to using 'ken burns' effect on edit transitions within the trailer.

Garageband was an unfamiliar software to me, therefore took a little while to get used to. I found it difficult to re create a score that I was influenced by, however with a little patience we produced a score using certain instruments and tweaking it with a more echo effect, that had a great effect on the teaser trailer overall.

IShowU is a technology that I used  last year that has also came in handy this year to show the examiner how I completed certain tasks. Its also important when completing my evaluation too. Although it was used for that it was also helpful for myself just in case i forgot how to do a certain task.

I used Photoshop CS5 to produce my magazine front cover and my poster, I felt like I could be more creative and use different tools this year due to the experience from last year, also this meant that I practically completed it in half of the time I had last year.

Evaluation: Question 3

What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

Throughout the year I believe that the audience feedback I have received has being extremely helpful as to in decisions I have had to make and shape and forming each production I have completed, these are the type of audience feedback I have used during the year.

Interviews:
Firstly I interviewed members of my class to find out what of what they expect from a teaser trailer by asking a numerous of questions from favorite genre to what codes and conventions they expect in a teaser trailer, this was very useful especially in differentiated between a full length trailer and a teaser trailer, also this helped me decided on a genre I wanted to produce.

Questionnaires:
These were handed out to the majority of the classroom, the questionnaire focused on my chosen genre 'horror', the purpose was to find out an audiences expectations of a horror teaser trailer from the Cinematography,Sound,Mise-en-scene and Editing. Once I collected the results this helped me and Lucy to think about a pitch.

Proposals:
Once we made our final decision of the genre we then created proposal where we had three plot ideas, to help us decide on what one to use we then produced a question using the social networking site Twitter for audience feedback, I apposed the question of 'What horror film plot appeals to you the most, a mad man killer or the curse of the scarecrow?'. I was very happy with the result as many people commented their opinions and helped us decided a final plot 'curse of the scarecrow'

Masthead of the film magazine:
I then used social networking site Twitter again to help me decided on a magazine title, I decided to use this as there was a broader audience to ask rather than sticking to my media class. There was 5 options to chose from where the majority chose 'ProFilm'.

Production Logos:
Once we began thinking about producing production company logos, I drew 7 sketches, I then asked for some audience feedback of what one they preferred, although there was a split in the class I decided to use the two popular ones and merge ideas together on Photoshop SC5.

Magazine masthead font:
After the decision of 'ProFilm' I then used dafont.com to search for some unique font types, due to the vast choice chose a number of them, this was when I didn't know what one worked best, I decided I needed some audience feedback I asked numerous of students from my class also my teacher, they all agreed that 'Telegrafico' had a clean film sort look to it.

Teaser Trailer Feedback:
Receiving feedback from the class was very helpful especially as it was from another spectators eyes rather than mine or Lucy's, it somehow answered my questions of it being suspenseful as to if they understood the narrative. The point of strengths and weaknesses helped us to tweak and change elements of the trailer so that we could improve the product.

Poster and Magazine Feedback:
Again a similar process of the teaser trailer audience feedback of them answering questions of the type of narrative, the strengths and weaknesses of both magazine cover and poster. This was very helpful in the appearance of both products, especially with the detail of small mistakes from  font size to the placement of certain text or shapes.

Teachers feedback:
This was extremely important to me as it gave me an idea of what I was doing right throughout the entire production of my teaser trailer, poster and magazine cover.

Evaluation: Question 2

Question 2: How Effective Is The Combination Of Your Main Product And Ancillary Tasks?

Representation of characters:
With the representation of my characters you can see that I have used the synergy with my villain, I decided to do this as he was the protagonist of the narrative, using him on my poster, magazine cover would allow my intended audience to know that he was not to be trusted and a hint to the cause of the problem within the trailer, as flash inserts are placed in the trailer where trouble is seen with the teens.

Font type:
With my poster and magazine cover I have used the same font type and colours, I decided that by doing this I would create a synergy allowing the audience to recognise that they are the same production. I also used the same font for the title of the film 'After Dark' that can be seen in the trailer towards the end.

Location:
In all three of my productions my location is visible, the woodland area is used as part of the narrative and on my poster and magazine cover are used as backgrounds, I have gave them both dark filters that links nicely with the film title 'After Dark' also a hint to the audience that the villain should not be trusted as he is hidden with the dark  shadowing.

Evaluation: Question 1

In what ways does your media products use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Film Teaser Trailer:

Use:
* Although challenge the narrative we also use some structure to Todorov’s narrative theory as we have a equilibrium, peaks and troughs and a disruption with a new equilibrium, however not a climax as we don’t want to tell too much of the narrative away as it is a teaser trailer.

Develop:
*For the score we was influenced by Wrong Turn, however we developed the sound by adding another instrument to add more tension as they had sound effects of the car crashing, we felt that the added sound help build up to the fast paced montage that was leading to the climax.

Challenge:
*We challenged Todorov’s narrative theory as we placed our recognition of disruption before the actual disruption, as we see the newsreader stating the teenagers have gone missing before the fast paced montage of them being attacked by the villain.
*The story line felt unique in the sense of the villain been a scarecrow, also the narrative left the audience questioning, especially towards the end of the film included Carol Clover’s final girl theory.

Film Poster:

Use
* I have used influence from majority of film posters to use the SteelTongs font, this is part of the marketing tool and to inform the audience who the cast & crew is of the film.

Develop:
*I developed the convention of slug-line beneath the film title 'After Dark', I used 'remember the 5th of November' where it was a play on words that links very nicely with the narrative and the celebration of guy falks.
* With the genre of my film I have developed the style of the poster, by using a blue filter for the woodland background I feel like I have challenged the horror genre. With the use of gradient overlay too I feel like the narrative is been shown, especially through the antagonist.

Challenge:
*The positioning of the villain was challenged, at the start of the year we did ancillary task where we was given a task to produce a draft poster for a film, I used that as an influence and produced my poster around that.

Film Magainze:

Use:
I have first of all used the conventions of a film magazine, influenced by film magazines such as 'Total Film' for example:
*Use of Barcode located on the right hand side beneath the masthead.
*The use of 3 colour theme of red, grey and black.
*The masthead 'PROFILM' located at the top of the page being the largest text on magazine so that an audience could recognize it, also an advertisement tool.
*Conventional use of price, issue number and date informing the target audience.

Develop:
*Although I'm using the structure of the text in some areas I have developed it by using a different style font and size as the one from the real media text did not fit my genre of horror.
Developed the masthead, by using a different font and colour than an existing one from 'Empire'.

Challenge:
*Although the shot type is similar I decided to Use the Villain on the cover rather than the victim, which could be viewed as quite unconventional, also using this character was challenging as you cant detect emotion due to the Mise-en-scene.
*Using the gradient tool over the photograph was a challenge, however it gives the magazine that sense of dark mystery around the villain.

Research and Planning- title frames within the trailer

After looking through the trailer we realised that we had a title frame that was black and needed to be editing as the others to create a synergy.
