Research and Planning - History of film magazines.

Empire:
Empire magazine is the biggest selling British film specialist magazine that is published monthly, the first issue was published in July 1989 by Empa. However today its publisher is Bauer Consumer Media. Empire magazine are constantly outselling their nearest rival Total Film. Empire likes to review both mainstream films and art films. Although the magazine includes reviews, previews and film news it also includes some unique features for example a transcript of a classic film scene. You can also use the Empire website, where you can give your review and also subscribe to the magazine.


Total Film:
Total Film is also a British film magazine that was first published first in 1997 by future publishing, it offers film, DVD and blu-ray news, reviews and features. They are known for special guest editors such as Peter Jackson and Kevin Smith. This is also published monthly. The magazine is very popular and is at rival with top film magazine Empire. The magazine includes interviews with directors and up coming actors, also the last two pages include a total film quiz with a chance for the winner to receive a prize. This also includes a website to visit where you can interact and subscribe to the magazine.


Sight & Sound:
Sight & Sound is another British film magazine that is published by the British Film Institute monthly.The magazine was first published in 1932 however in 1934 management of the magazine handed it to Nascent BFI, who still publishes it today. The magazine shares mainstream film reviews as well as narrow art house releases. Sight & Sound also currently features a full cast and crew credit for each film reviewed.
