Research & Planning: Film Magazine Analysis 1

This is a Empire magazine front cover this is clearly shown by the masthead that is well known especially in the film industry, the film is advertising 'The Exorcist' a classic horror movie shown by the bold title at the bottom of the page. We can tell this is a special edition as it says 'the 500 greatest movies of all time' this can be a great marketing tool that grabs an audience. You can tell this is a magazine cover as it has all the main conventions:

  • A masthead
  • Barcode
  • Tagline
  • Issue Number
  • Price
  • Website
  • Genre convention colours
We can see the genre of the film is shown through the elements of the magazine, for example the use of colour theme black, red and white are conventionally linked with horror genre, also the mystified long shot in black and white with a low key lighting also enhancing this horror genre. A tagline is used 'the power of chirst compels you!' this is key for a film especially in horrors as it attracts an audience and also makes a film memorable.
The primary audience would be 20-40 years, working class who have a passion for film or working in that particular industry, however the secondary audience would be students 16-20 years who may be studying media/film
